The federal government proposes to change and ultimately toughen the rules of receiving study and work visas for international students, Vancouver Sun reports. The measure will allegedly help crack down on fraud and human smuggling of international students.
The proposed rules ask the provinces to submit a list of credible post-secondary institutions which should benefit from the international student visa program. Schools not on the list will no longer be allowed to accept international students. In addition, according to the proposed rules, student visas will no longer be issued for programs lasting less than six months.
Both Australia and UK have introduced similar measures.
