On June 30, 2015, CIC issued a notice advising of an increasing reports of a cross-Canada phone scam. According to CIC, in some instances individuals receive a phone call from an “immigration officer” calling to collect additional personal information. In other instances, the victims were asked to confirm their SIN card numbers, date of birth and other personal information. Some victims were led to believe that they violated immigration laws and can be subject to jail time and loss of immigration status.

Please note that CIC does not contact clients over the phone to collect fines to avoid deportation or asks to pay by purchasing pre-paid credit card, etc. Please hang up immediately if you receive such a call, then contact your local police station.

CIC provides helpful tips to individuals on how to avoid becoming a victim of fraud.
